I am a fan of the Andy Griffith show. As funny as it may seem, I can envision the town of Mayberry (which doesn’t exist) and watching the show brings me a sense of family. My husband and I usually watch a few episodes in the evening ….we record every one that airs.
We were watching one of my favorite episodes last night. If you’re a fan as well, you may know which one I’m speaking of. A dangerous criminal has escaped the State Prison and headed toward Mayberry to hide out. Barney inadvertently captures the criminal. The man’s anger rages as he turns to Barney and makes this statement, “I’ll get you for this!”
Of course Barney is frightened as I would be as well. The part that reminded me of Jesus’ safe guard over us, is the last scene. Barney sits in the old barn in what Andy called “Headquarters.” Andy knew all along the escaped convict was in the loft of the barn and if he knew Barney was alone down below, he would surely kill him. However, Andy left Barney alone to make him feel important and boost his confidence.
s the convict climbs down the stairs of the loft to kill Barney, Barney sits unaware of the impending danger. What brought a warm feeling to my heart was that Andy watched through a hole in the side of the old barn within arms reach of Barney. Andy did not intend for Barney to be killed so he kept watching with gun in hand and when the convict reached the bottom step Andy threw a rock and hit a tin can. This made Barney stand up and shoot his gun in fear which made the criminal raise his hands in surrender.
Such a wonderful picture of what God does for us on a daily basis, even when we are unaware of danger heading right for us. God keeps his eye on us and is ready to step in before danger can strike.
What is the price of two sparrows–one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31 (NLT.)
