We have all heard the word “free” used in many ways. “Buy one, get one free”, “I’m single and free again”, and last but not least, “This is a free country”. I usually don’t think anything of it when I hear one of these phrases (unless the buy one, get one free is about shoes). However, there is a great meaning behind freedom.
Together, let’s explore what scripture has to say about being free. “And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” This comes from John 8:32. There are all sorts of versions of the Bible that relay the meaning with different words. God could have meant it in different ways as well
Think about this, if we harbor bitterness in our hearts against someone that has wronged us, we are in bondage to that person. That bitterness spreads throughout our bodies like cancer; yet, does nothing to the person for which we hold it. So, what do we do about this? We release the person from the ugliness that we carry in our hearts everyday. This doesn’t mean that we agree with what they did to us, it simply means that person doesn’t have control over our lives anymore.
It’s not just bitterness we need to be free from. There is also unforgiveness, anger and rage, lies, and so on and so forth. We all know the drill – someone says or does something to us that makes us angry and we immediately become outraged at that person and we let everyone know – come on, you know we do. Let’s try something new next time. Let’s forgive them as soon as an incident happens and not let bitterness and anger set up on the inside of us.
It’s going to be difficult, but I’m going to try this myself and see if I can do it. God will have to help me!!!!
Let me know how it works for you.
